Renshaw: The Meridian Line The Veyr Meridian has a name. It does not yet have an explanation. |

01 / Classification and origin A confirmed people represented by an incomplete file. Meridian classifies the Veyr as a non-human people associated with a realm identified in surviving accounts as the Echo World. They are not transformed humans and are not presently believed to occur naturally on Earth. The small number known or suspected to have reached this world are therefore considered displaced beings. Their arrival is presumed to have involved one or more crossing events, although Meridian has no verified account of how those crossings were created, whether the Veyr controlled them or whether return remains possible. It cannot yet confirm that the Echo World is their sole place of origin rather than simply the realm from which known individuals arrived. No reliable population estimate exists. Meridian has identified no confirmed Veyr settlement, governing body or organised presence on Earth. Separate reports may describe different individuals, repeated encounters with the same individual or incidents incorrectly grouped beneath one designation.
02 / Observed characteristics Human appearance conceals an inhuman physical capacity. Known Veyr have maintained an outwardly human appearance without any consistently recorded physical marker. Meridian has not established whether this appearance is entirely natural, influenced by perception or conceals another form. Visual identification alone is therefore considered unreliable. Credible encounters attribute enhanced strength, speed, reflexes, sensory acuity and accelerated healing to the Veyr. The upper limits of those abilities have not been measured, and surviving reports do not provide enough consistency to establish how much variation exists between individuals. Veyr feed upon blood. Meridian has not determined the required frequency, whether blood is their sole nourishment or precisely how feeding supports their healing and physical abilities. Nothing presently demonstrates that killing is biologically necessary. Predatory conduct recorded in an individual case must not be mistaken for the inevitable behaviour of an entire people. 03 / Suppression and recognition The Veyr do not disappear. The mind stops insisting that they are there. The most distinctive ability attributed to the Veyr is the suppression of awareness surrounding their own existence. Affected people may overlook them, accept their presence without questioning it or fail to assign lasting significance to an encounter. This allows a Veyr to move through ordinary society without depending upon conventional secrecy, even while remaining physically present and capable of direct interaction. Related influence may be used to redirect attention or press upon another person’s perception and judgement. The effect is not infallible. Supernatural nature, inherited resistance or another unknown factor may cause an intended subject to respond differently, but such resistance does not automatically tell the Veyr what that person is. There is no evidence that a Veyr can identify concealed supernatural heritage at a distance. A failed attempt at influence may reveal that a person is not what they first appeared to be, while direct physical contact or the taste of their blood may expose qualities that could not otherwise be detected. Meridian does not yet know whether this capacity is universal or varies between individuals.
04 / Meridian assessment The unknown must not be mistaken for the limitless. Meridian does not possess dependable information concerning Veyr lifespan, reproduction, social organisation, culture, population, full range of abilities or natural vulnerabilities. It cannot confirm the conditions within the Echo World, the number of crossings that have occurred or whether every Veyr on Earth shares the same relationship with blood and perception. Investigators dealing with a suspected Veyr are advised to assume that attention, judgement and recollection may have been influenced. Witness statements should be corroborated independently, and unexplained gaps or inconsistencies should not be dismissed solely as panic or poor memory. A Veyr is not classified as hostile merely because of their origin, feeding needs or abilities. Meridian assesses the actions of the individual before it. The cruelty, appetites or methods of one offender provide evidence about that person—not a moral definition of their species.

The Veyr do not need to become invisible to pass unseen. Sometimes the mind performs the hiding for them. |
